Golf Penalty Shots
Not all the Golf Shots you make are acceptable. Just like in any other sports, Golf sets limits and boundaries to the Kinds of Shots you can do and punishment comes to those who violates it in the form of Penalty Shots. Penalty Shots are shots added to your score when you accidentally or deliberately make a wrong move. Here is a list of Golf Shots you will definitely want to avoid because you not only add a stroke to your score, but you also sometimes have to go back to where you last took your shot before you got the penalty.
Water Hazards - Hitting the Ball into the Water
Hitting your ball into the Water Hazard will cause you one Penalty Stroke. If your stake is yellow or your Golf Ball is in line with the Tee and the Green, you drop your ball between you and the Hole.
It is called a Lateral Water Hazard if the stakes are red or your ball is not directly in line between the Tee and the Green, you take the Penalty Shot and drop the ball two Club-Lengths from that spot. Make sure your Drop is not closer to the hole than where your shot went into the Water Hazard.
OB - Out of Bounds
You hit Out of Bounds when your Golf Ball lands outside the white stake marks that indicate the boundaries of the Golf Course or when your ball hits off limits territory. This Golf Shot will cause you to take a Penalty Shot and to hit again from the spot of your original Shot.
Wrong Ball and Lost Ball
These are cases where recognizing your own ball really becomes important. If you don't know your own ball and suddenly you lost track of it - you may either play the wrong ball or you may declare a lost ball even when your ball is just lying in front of you. As discussed in the Golf Rules, playing the Wrong Ball will not only cost you a Penalty Shot. You will also need to play the wrong ball until it gets into the hole before you can play your own. On the other hand, when in spite all your efforts you really cannot find your ball or you just don't recognize that the one in front of you is your ball; you should declare that your ball is lost. In this case, you will take two penalty shots and go back to where you hit last before you lost your ball.
Unplayable Lie
An Unplayable Lie is when the ball is in a position where there is no chance of getting the Golf Club on it. This kind of shot will cost you one Penalty Stroke and you will have to take the next shot two club-lengths from where the ball is. You may also go as far back as you want and Drop the Golf Ball. The other option is to hit the ball on the spot where you hit it last- the one that brought you into this Penalty Stroke.
