TPC at Avenel Under Major Renovation

The former golf course known as TPC at Avenel is under major renovation for several months already, amounting to $25 million. Once completed, the renovation in the golf course and clubhouse is hoped to challenge the 800 members of the Potomac club and the best players in the golf industry.
The goal is to make the golf course brand new, with reconstructed new tees and greens, newly designed fairways and bunkers, and major upgrades on the clubhouse. The new official name of the golf course will be revealed by PGA Tour officials this week.
Scheduled to reopen in November, PGA Tour officials are preparing to set the venue in place of high-level tournament in the golf course renamed as TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms. Rumors have been circulating about a possible Senior Players Championship, one of the four majors on the Champions Tour, taking place in the newly renovated golf course. Usually scheduled in the fall and played at Baltimore Country Club/Five Farms in Timonium, Md., through 2010, TPC Potomac was apparently considered to be the venue to draw a bigger crowd and more media exposure.
Tiger Woods was also in the Washington suburbs last Tuesday, promoting the AT&T National set in early July. The AT&T National is scheduled for this year and next year at the Congressional, located just a mile from the Avenel’s first tee. However, as the Congressional is preparing for the 2011 U.S Open, Woods and his foundation behind the AT&T National are looking for a replacement venue for 2010 and 2011 tour.
PGA Tour officials are consistent in saying that they put no pressure on Woods to have his tournament in the newly renovated golf course, and no other event is considered for the golf course yet. They would like the course to speak for itself.
