LAS VEGAS – The members of Spanish Trail Golf & Country Club answered the call and raised $72,000 to help finance UNLV’s six-game tour of Australia, led by a new Honorary Member of Spanish Trail, Coach Lon Kruger. The Club hosted the Lon Kruger Open "Going Down Under" Charity Golf Tournament on Wednesday, May 21st, where members and member-guests played in an exclusive 18-hole scramble tournament for $1,000 per entry and enjoyed a shotgun start followed by cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and post-play awards at the clubhouse. At the awards ceremony, Coach Kruger was presented with an honorary membership to Spanish Trail Golf and Country Club by Mike Ford, President of Spanish Trail’s Board of Directors.
The Lon Kruger Charity Golf Tournament was a huge success for the UNLV Basketball organization as well as for the Club’s participants. Taking the overall team championship was the foursome of Spanish Trail members Lynn Leany, Scott Zemp, Randy Kuiper, and Mark Hedge. Finishing in second was the team of Jerry Savio, Rocky Savio, Drew Stevens, and Mark Pulman.
Dominic Guzzo, General Manager at Spanish Trail, comments, "We are thrilled that our members responded so enthusiastically to this opportunity to do what they love – play golf, while showing their support of our hometown team."
Coach Lon Kruger shares, "The people at Spanish Trail Golf and Country Club were absolutely terrific. They stepped forward financially in a big way in support of this learning opportunity and cultural experience for our basketball team. Our players and program will benefit greatly."
Thanks to the Spanish Trail membership, the trip to Australia will help Coach Kruger to get an early look at what promises to be an exciting 2008-09 Rebel team, led by senior-to-be shooting guard, Wink Adams. The Rebels will play primarily against Aussie club teams from June 23 to July 5. Plus, they will have the opportunity to practice for 10 days before the trip.
