New Zealand - Thomas Spearman-Burn and Dana Kim won the national matchplay titles in Paraparaumu Beach yesterday.
The 18-year old Spearman-Burn won the men’s title after defeating Tauranga’s Kevin Smith 4 and 2. Kim won with her eagle shots, a 7 and 5 victory against the 16-year old Whakatane Zoe Brake in the final 36th hole.
Kim played with outstanding three eagles. She said that the game is one of her “most outstanding plays” and mentioned how the course suits her game. Kim started playing only five years ago, and is considered the first woman who won the national matchplay since Susan Grigg in 1952. She is also the first New Zealander since Brenda Ormsby in 1996 to play both matchplay and strokeplay titles on different times of the year.
Spearman-Burn, on the other hand, finished with the Wellington golfers after Sean Kells and Shaun Richards who took the foursome in Paraparaumu beach. James Betts took the strokeplay. Spearman-Burn started the competition only as a reserve. He started the matchplay with two downs after the nine holes, but picked up his pace, eventually defeating Smith. Spearman-Burn and Smith both shared eagles, but Spearman-Burn was three up ahead of Smith.
Next year, the matchplay will head to Titirangi and Remeura where both men and women will play both courses in an altered format.
