Is Woods' Loss A Good Thing?
SATURDAY, 23 JUNE 2007
Tiger Woods already has 12 majors under his sleeve. Had he won the Masters and the recently concluded US Open, he would have totaled 14 wins, which would make him a mere 4 wins away from reaching Jack Nicklaus’ record.
Instead, Argentinean Angel Cabera’s victory puts him at 6 to reach and 7 to break the record, which will most probably take him 1 or 2 years longer than if he was already at 14. The suspense of whether he will grab the record within the next 5 or 6 years is what will keep interest in the majors from diminishing, many believe.
Moreover, Cabrera’s victory may raise interest in golf in Argentina and its neighboring countries in South America.
Woods may have lost, but judging by the speculations, his sport certainly didn’t.
