Legendary amateur golfer and sportswriter for the New York Times Maureen Esther Orcutt has died. The news came out Friday at the PGA's official website www.pga.com.
Born on April 1, 1907, Orcutt rose to fame at a time when there weren't any professional tournaments yet. Nevertheless, she proved her mettle in various amateur tournaments as well as in exhibition games with other famous golfers. She won 65 major amateur events and the US Golf Association's senior championships in 1962 and 1966. Aside from that, she won against Babe Zaharias in an exhibition game which Orcutt won and left Zaharias upset.
