US Ryder Cup Team Needs Young Blood
WEDNESDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER 2006
Why hasn't the American team won the Ryder Cup for several years now? What better person to ask but the world's number one golfer, Tiger Woods. The Associated Press asked Woods' about his thoughts on that question and below are some of the things he said.
First of all, Woods thinks that it would benefit the team to have younger players. The team that competed this year at the K Club was composed of golfers who are 30 years old and older. On the other hand, the European team has promising players who are just in their twenties including Sergio Garcia.
Aside from the age factor, Woods also commented on his team's failure to take a quick start in the matches that they played. Also, he made a comment on how the European team made "momentum-building" putts, something which his team lacked.
Then there's the factor of home advantage for the Europeans, Woods said. He said that when tournaments are held in Europe, they are in venues that the European players are familiar with. It is not the case with Americans, however. According to Woods, while the American venues are "fantastic" and "difficult" venues, they are courses that the American team members do not play in themselves. It is therefore no relief for them that the next Ryder Cup will be held in 2008 at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, because by that time, it will have been eight years since any of them have seen the course.
