Casey Wins World Match Play
TUESDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2006
British golfer Paul Casey went home with the biggest prize in golf by winning his first appearance at the World Match Play last Sunday. He defeated Shaun Micheel with a final score of 10 and 8 to win the 1 million-pound first prize. Micheel, who defeated Tiger Woods in the first round, went home 400,000 pounds.
Casey said in his website www.paul-casey.com that he, "could not have dreamed for a better conclusion," to his first invitation in the event he grew up watching. Winning the same event where major champions won was, "truly a dream come true," he added.
Before winning the final match, Casey defeated Retief Goosen in the first round, Mike Weir in the around after that and Colin Montgomerie in the semifinals. He played just 124 holes in the entire event, beating Ian Woosnam's record 128 in 2001.
