Woods Defends Open Championship
MONDAY, 24 JULY 2006
The 2006 Open Championship ended on an emotional note with an image of Tiger Woods hugging his caddie Steve Williams as he sunk his last shot to win this year's tournament. It was the first time for the world's number one golfer to win a major title after the demise of his father Earl a few months ago. He was quoted as saying that his father would have been very proud if the elder Woods had been there to witness the event.
With his victory, Woods became the first to win back-to-back Open Championships since Tom Watson in 1983. Woods, who ended with an 18-under-par, was trailed by Chris DiMarco who had a 16-under-par. DiMarco came close to Woods by just a shot at the 12th but eventually came short in the end.
Ernie Els finished with a 13-under-par for a solo third place finish. Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia's performance fizzled out in the end to tie with Japanese Hideto Tanihara at fourth place with an 11-under-par.
