First USA China Friendship Cup Slated on July
MONDAY, 15 MAY 2006
July 25-29 will mark another milestone in golf history. The United States and China will be holding its first USA China Friendship Cup at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, California.
The American team will be made up of 12 members, eight of them men and the other four, women.
Speaking in behalf of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and the National Golf Coaches Association, president of the GCAA Tom Drennan said that he is honored to be invited in the prestigious event against the young Chinese players. He referred to them as an, “up-and-coming population in the game of golf.”
Zhang Xiao Ning, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Golf Association, was also optimistic about the event. He said that it is a nice beginning for both countries and added that, “it is a great time for Chinese golf.”
From the landmark event, subsequent friendship games will be held every two years with the venues alternating between the two countries. The next Friendship Cup will be held in Beijing in the summer of 2008, just before the summer Olympics there. The competition will then return to the United States in 2010.
