Augusta Woes In First Round of Masters
FRIDAY, 7 APRIL 2006
The effects of the changes made in Augusta this year are quickly becoming apparent. With only a third of the participants finishing at least with an even par in the first round of the Masters, it had been a struggle for most, if not all of them.
Vijay Singh led the first round by finishing with 67. Meanwhile, Rocco Mediate and Arron Oberholser finished with 68 and 69 to finish second and third, respectively. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, finished with 72 to tie with 10 others, including Rod Pampling.
But Woods is satisfied with his first round result. “I thought I played really well, actually,” said Woods and added that he is better than last year. Last year, he shot a 74 in the first round and eventually beat Chris DiMarco in a playoff.
Aside from the lengthened course, there is also the weather. With weather forecasts predicting a warm and dry weather throughout the tournament, the players expect faster greens. Ernie Els, 2nd placer of the 2004 Masters said, "we haven't really played Augusta the last five, six years in very firm, fast conditions. We haven't played a new course, so to speak, in firm, fast conditions. There's going to be a mix of players in there."
With one round gone and three to go, this year's Masters will surely be decided on who quickly adapts to this year's lengthened course.
