Ames Named PGA's March Player of the Month
MONDAY, 24 APRIL 2006
Officials of the PGA Tour has recently announced Stephen Ames as March's PGA Tour Player of the Month. It was Ames' first time to receive the said award.
Ames, who is number 7 in the world's golf rankings, had a strong showing in each of the events he competed in last March, at the same time improving at every event. At the Ford Championship at Doral last March 2-5, he finished 20th and took home around $59,600 in earnings. Meanwhile, at the Honda Classic from March 9-12, he managed to finish 7th and had a total of $171,417 in earnings. Finally, he won The Players Championship on March 23-26 and took home $1,440,000.
The Canadian golfer, who turns 42 this Friday, has had significant improvements in his game since late January of this year. He has had a poor showing in the four tournaments he joined during the period of January 26 to February 26. He missed the cut of the two of those, withdrew from one and placed 33rd in his last for February. As for April, he placed 11th at The Masters in Augusta and earned $161,000. It is also a significant improvement as compared to his 45th-place finish at last year's Masters. Whether he'll have more good games ahead of him is a matter of speculation, but for sure, he was at the top of his form last March and the tour organizers certainly agree.
