Golf Club Shafts - Features
The features of your Golf Club Shaft greatly affect your swing and overall performance. If you have a good shaft, you have a good Golf Club. If you want to understand how it influences your game, you need to know the material/s used in making the shaft. In addition, Golf Club Shafts have varying factors which have an effect on your swing. Know what these factors are in this section:
- Flex
This refers to the stiffness or flexibility of the shaft, or the ability of the shaft to bend in a Golf Swing. Therefore, it directly affects the quality of your swing, specifically the distance and direction. A stiffer shaft will give you more control on your swing. In general, you need a stiffer shaft if you have a high swing speed. If you have a slower swing speed, opt a shaft with greater Flex. To help you determine the Flex of a shaft, manufacturers use the following Flex ratings:
- L Ladies
- A Seniors
- R Regular
- F Firm
- S Stiff
- XS Extra Stiff
Your level of ability plays a big role in determining the right Flex for you. For instance, it is advisable to use a more flexible shaft if you are a beginner or if you have a slower swing.
- Torque Rating
This refers to how much twist the shaft makes in a swing as well as the kind of feel of the shaft. Torque is measured in degrees. Shafts with a lower rating will feel stiff, and are usually used by golfers with a high swing speed. The higher the number, the more the shaft twists and the softer it will feel.
- Length
This should be appropriate to your height and the average distance of both your hands to the floor. To get the average distance, stand straight and ask someone to measure from the point where your wrist and hand meet to the floor. Do this with your other hand.
There is more to a Golf Club Shaft than just the bar or rod that connects the grip and clubhead. Get familiar with the different features of your shaft so you will be able to determine how they help improve your game. With a better understanding of the general make-up of your Golf Club Shaft, it will be easier for you to make a good Golf Swing, hit the Golf Ball, and enhance your overall performance.
