Golf Gadgets and other Golf Gear
Basically, you only need Golf Clubs and some Golf Balls to play a game of Golf. Those are the basic necessities. For better and more comfortable play, you can add Golf Shoes, Golf Gloves and a Golf Bag to your collection of Golf Gear. In this section we take a short look at some of the most common pieces of additional golf equipment:
Golf Ball Markers
A Golf Ball Marker is used to mark the position of the Golf Ball before it is lifted for cleaning or to take your ball out of the way so the other players can take his or her Putt. It may be a coin, small, round piece of plastic or anything similar. You can only Mark your Ball when you are on the Green so your ball won't get in the way when someone putts. To mark your ball, here are the steps you need to take:
- Place your Ball Marker three or four inches behind your ball.
- Slide your marker towards the ball until it is almost touching.
- Leave your Ball Marker and get your ball.
- If your marker is in another player's line to the hole then you can move your Ball Marker one Clubhead's width from the original mark. After he or she makes the putt, you place your ball to where the original mark was.
- When it is your turn to putt, you place your ball on the ground just barely in front of the marker and slide the marker away.
Tees
A Tee is a peg that is used to elevate the Golf Ball from the ground at the start of each Hole. On your first shot, where you will generally use the Driver, the Tee helps you to have a cleaner and fuller ball contact. Never forget to pick it up after your Tee Shot. Golf Tees come in different sizes and are mostly made out of wood or plastic. Some companies are starting to make Tees out of biodegradable materials that decompose on the grass so you won't have to pick it up or do not have to worry about them if you lose one. For a Par-Three Hole you may use a very short Tee that sets the ball barely off the ground. If you want your ball to be way up off the ground, you may buy a four-inch long Tee.
Golf Pull Cart
As discussed in our section on Golf Bag Types, there are three kinds of Golf Bags: the Staff or Tour Bag, the Cart Bag and the Carry Bag. To make it easier to carry a golf bag you can use a special Golf Pull Cart. A Pull Cart is a simple contraption consisting of a frame, wheels and a handle enabling you to rest your golf bag on top of the pull cart. Instead of carrying your bag you can then pull and roll it along with you. It does not beat having a caddie but sure takes the strain of your shoulders.
Golf Ball Retriever
If you have a box of favorite and expensive golf balls then it might upset you greatly when you mishit your ball and find your golf ball in a position where you can see it but you cannot reach it. This is where Golf Ball Retrievers can lend a helping hand. Golf Ball Retrievers are poles that are about the size of a Golf Club but can extend a great length (some up to 12 feet). At the top of the golf ball retriever is a claw head that can snatch a golf ball out of any hazard as long as it is reachable. Using a golf ball retriever you can retrieve your ball out of bushes or even water hazards.
Golf Scorekeeper
Score keeping is usually done with the Golf Course card you receive upon paying the green fees. Instead of doing this manually you might want to buy a Golf Scorekeeper. These digital gadgets are mini computers about the size of a pocket calculator or a stop watch. By clicking on the buttons each time you take a shot or have a penalty stroke you can keep scores and the machine will automatically calculate the end results and give results per hole. Some expensive watches even have golf scorekeepers.
Golf Distance Finder
A Golf Distance Finder looks like a pair of glasses or binoculars. You line up a mark in the viewfinder with a target, for example: the flag and a row of numbers at the bottom will read out the estimated distance to the target. Some Distance Finders shoot a laser at your target. The laser bounces off the target and comes back to the reader. The distance is shown digitally at the bottom of the screen. Because Distance Finders take away the challenge of estimating distance they are prohibited in Tournament Play.
Golf Club Headcovers
Golf Clubs are precision instruments that consists of many Golf Club Parts. These parts can get damaged if you allow your clubs to rattle freely and unprotected in your golf bag. Especially in transporting your golf clubs or checking them in for a flight, they are likely to bang against each other and get damaged. The Grooves of a golf club have a great impact of the spin you give to a ball and damaged grooves can influence your ball flight. Special Golf Club Headcovers are like socks for your golf clubs and protect them. They come in all shapes and sizes ranging from very conventional to very outrageous! Look for clubheads that have the name of the club written clearly on top of them so you do not have to guess what club you are getting out of your bag.
There are however many, many other Golf Tools, Golf Gadgets and pieces of Golf Equipment that each have their own use on the Golf Course. The basic pieces of equipment are necessary but if you want to add more equipment for your golf gear, this section might help you out.
