Golf Club - Putters
This is the last Golf Club you will generally be using in a game of Golf unless you chip it in or even make a hole in one. As explained in our section on Putting, making a good put is a combination of a number of skills including Reading the Green and making a good Putting Swing.
Putter are specifically designed for their unique purpose:
- Putters are Golf Clubs you will probably be using the most and they decide the outcome of holes. So your putter could well be considered the most important golf club your have in your bag.
- Putters are generally made of softer metal compared to the other Golf Clubs making them more vulnerable for bending and breaking. Take good care of your putters and make sure they are stored away well at all times. If you miss a put withstand the temptation to throw or hit your putter.
- The Clubface of the Putter is perfectly perpendicular to the target.
- Putters have two to three degrees of loft.
- Golf Club makers are now making Putters with longer shafts and two grips. This development gives the player more control over their Putt. If you are having trouble with traditional putters you could try a longer shafted putter.
- Putters can generally be divided into Mallet Putters or Blade Putters. Mallet Putters are shaped like a baseball cut in half. It has a round back and a large, flat sole. Mallet Putters are more forgiving for off-center putts. Blade Putters are rectangular shaped and have more right angles. Blade Putters are easier to align, but are less forgiving than Mallet Putters.
You will need a Putter that feels right for you and that makes the ball go where you want it to. Some players play with only one Putter, but most pros have multiple Putters in their Golf Bag. For beginners, it is good to use only one Putter and get comfortable playing with it before experimenting with other Putters.
