Golf Club Buying Guide - How to Buy Golf Clubs

Golf Club Buying Guide - How to Buy Golf Clubs In our previous sections on Golf Clubs, you have learned how important sizing your Golf Club is and that it is important to have a club with a shaft that is just right for your height and arm length to be able to make a good Golf Swing. You have also been familiarized with the different Golf Club parts and features: the Clubhead, the Shaft, the Grip and the different Grip Materials - the natural leather, synthetic leather, rubber and cord grips. You can now differentiate the Woods from the Irons and the Putter. You are now eager to Buy your own Golf Club Set and start Playing Golf!

In this section, you will be guided on Buying Golf Clubs for you to get the best value for your money.

Your Budget
It helps to determine your budget first. How much do you intend to spend? Golf Clubs can range from cheap low quality beginner clubs to very expensive high end models. As in most pieces of Gear, different qualities and brands also mean different prices. Some real good quality clubs tend to have high prices. If you want to spend less you may buy cheaper or second hand Golf Clubs without sacrificing too much of the quality.

Size of the Golf Club
You wouldn't want to invest hundreds of dollars into a Golf Club and not be able to use them. It is imperative that you get a Golf Club with the correct Shaft Size that allows you to take a Good Swing. Check your height, the length of your arms and the speed of your Swing to know how long your Shaft should be.

Golf Club Flex
One important thing to consider when Buying Golf Club is the Shaft Flex. The Shaft's Flex is the ability of the Shaft to bend as you apply force into it during the swing. Your Swing and Flex of your Club should match, if not, your clubface will not be properly aligned during impact. When this happens, your ball will miss your target. There are five basic Club Flex Ratings:
  • Regular
  • Stiff
  • Extra Stiff
  • Senior
  • Ladies
Only a few people choose extra stiff shafts. Stiff shaft is a popular choice for men. To find the right flex for you, you will need to examine your swing speed and the flight of your ball. Most shops offer club fitting. The trick is to try different clubs, examine the effect of the different flexes in your shot, and decide which Flex feels right you.

Perimeter Weighting
Clubs with Perimeter Weighting have extra weight distributed around the outside edges of the Clubface - the toe and the sole. This extra weight helps you when you failed to hit a shot. Perimeter Weighting on the outside reduces the shock and keeps a lot of the weight of the Clubhead behind the ball making your shots fly straighter and farther. Most Golf Clubs now have perimeter weighting. It's up to you to decide how much is enough. Some Golfers want a giant club head; some think large club heads are harder to control on a Swing. Know the Perimeter Weight that works for you, bigger or smaller. Ask the salesperson where the Perimeter Weight is on the clubhead since companies move this weight around to promote higher or lower shots.

Shaft Material
Club Shafts are usually made out of either steel or graphite. Graphite shafts are lighter but less durable than steel shafts. Steel shafts, on the other hand, are heavier. They are highly durable and their surfaces are not painted so you do not have to worry about scratching it.

Feel of the Golf Club
Try as many different Golf Clubs as you can. Each person has a different body and a different Swing. Try swinging several clubs, in this way you will know which club you can comfortably swing with. Buy a Golf Club that feels right for you. "If it feels right, it must be right".

Brand
Different brands mean different characteristics and different prices. If you intend to really play serious Golf, invest on the brand that is of high quality standard. It's all right to have different brands for your Woods but this is not an ideal thing to do with your Irons. Irons should be of the same brand to help you avoid making swing adjustments everytime.

Women's Golf Clubs
Major Golf manufacturing companies are now producing Golf Clubs especially for women. Most women's Golf Clubs are sold at good prices. For beginners, it is more advisable to buy a new set of Golf Clubs that fits your body and feels good.

Buying Used Golf Clubs
When Buying Used Golf Clubs, you need to check the club condition. If it has rust specks on it, rust will most likely spread. It is not good to have a rusty Golf Club. Check if the Grooves are already a lot shallower than normal, or if the grips need to be replaced. You may not need to spend more for Used Golf Clubs, but it is necessary that you get good clubs for you to have a good game.

Learning how to buy Golf Clubs can help you choose a set of clubs that suits your preference, style and all the other things that you consider in buying one. Choose one that you can use for a long period of time.
