Golf Course - Parts

Golf Course - Parts The Golf Course is divided into different parts with different levels of difficulty. The basic parts are: The Tee-box, the Fairway, and the Green. The Tee-box is where you take your first shot. Your aim in the tee-box is to get your ball as close to the green as possible or in the fairway. From the fairway, you hit your ball towards the green and Putt into the Hole. Around these basic golf course parts are areas that are designed to make Golf more challenging and more difficult: the hazards, the rough, trees, and the fringe. In this section, we will look at all these golf course elements in more detail:

Tee-box
The Tee-box or the Tee is a rectangular or square shaped flat surface. The first shot you take is in the tee-box. This shot is called the Tee Shot, Teeing or Drive. Teeing is done by placing the ball in a peg called the tee and using the driver or any long wood to hit the ball into the fairway and as close to the green as possible.

Fairway
The Fairway is a stretch of closely mowed grass that extends, often in patches, from the tee to the green. To hit into the fairway is one of the main goals in golf since it is a lot easier to hit from the fairway to the green than from the rough or from the hazards. The clubs called Fairway Woods are used for long shots off the fairway. Fairway woods include the Two (rarely used today), Three, Four, and Five-Woods.

Green
This part of the golf course surrounds the Hole. It has very well groomed grass where you can make your Putt. The grass used in the Green can either be Bermuda grass or Bentgrass. Bentgrass is cut shorter than Bermuda making the ball roll faster on this grass type. Greens also differ in slope and firmness making Reading the Green a real art. Golf Balls roll faster on firmer Greens than on wet ones.

Hole
The ultimate goal in Golf. The Hole has a diameter of 10.8 centimeters and is at least 10 centimeters deep. It is surrounded by the Green. The location of the hole is marked by the Flagstick or Pin. A Red Flag means the Hole is in the front part of the Green; White means the Hole is in the middle, and; Blue Flag means the Hole is toward the back. In a game, you are not allowed to remove the Flagstick while the ball is in motion in case you forgot to remove it before you take your Shot.

Rough
This area borders the sides of the Fairways. The rough is rougher as the Grass is kept higher and is less groomed than on the fairway or green. This is one of the parts of the Golf Course you would want to avoid aside from the Hazards. It is harder to take Shots from the Rough than from the Fairway.

Golf Hazards
The Hazards make Golf a challenging game by inserting difficult obstacles in what else would be a single stretch of grass. Golf Hazards are the obstacles that are dotted around the Golf Course. Water Hazards can be ponds, lakes, creeks and rivers. A Water Hazard is marked by Yellow Stakes when it is located between you and the Green. It is a Lateral Hazard if it lines the perimeter of the Hole and is not directly between the Tee and the Green. Lateral Hazards are marked by Red Stakes.

Golf Hazards also include Bunkers or Sand Traps. Bunkers are pits of Sand that are usually located near your target. Bunkers can give very difficult situations like Fried-egg or Buried Lies. The Bunker also requires you to take special Bunker Shots, and Golf Clubs like the Sand Wedge or Pitching Wedge.

Fringe/Collar
The Fringe or the Collar encircles the Green and it is also one of the spots where the grass grows a little bit higher or is lined with bushes or trees.

Trees
Trees may also grow around the Golf Course to make the game a lot more difficult. There are instances when your ball can get stuck between roots or get caught up in the branches. Having your ball in this situation requires some problem solving.

Study carefully all the different parts of the Golf Course and it will make it easier for you to learn and master the sport. Remember that it is best to know the features of your "playground" so that you can create wonderful game strategies and go beyond challenging obstacles. Remember that there are parts of the Golf Course that are designed to make the Sport more difficult. Know them in detail.
