Golf Injury Prevention

Golf is a very safe sport. The chances of getting seriously injured on the Golf Course are very small. In fact the only potentially life threathening situations are getting hit by a Golf Ball or even less likely: getting hit by a golf cart or even less common: getting struck by lightning. This section looks at some commmon Golf Injuries and deals mostly with Injury Prevention in the Golf Course.

Blisters
Golfers commonly acquire Blisters when they place too much force on their Golf Grip. If you wear Gloves, you will probably see a worn out spot on the Gloves before you get the Blisters. You will most likely get Blisters on the heel of your left hand where the Butt of the Grip hits your hand and the middle joint of the index finger in your right hand which is the last finger at the bottom of the shaft. You may also get this kind of Golf Injury on your feet. This may be caused by the friction between your feet and your Golf Shoes.

To avoid getting Blisters, it helps to use Golf Gloves to protect your hand. Once you get blisters, they can easily be taken care of with a band aid, so it is always handy to carry those strips while playing Golf. It is best to buy bigger sized cloth strips since they are more flexible and to make sure the sore is fully covered. For Foot Blisters, you may put band aid on the Blister and put on an extra sock to provide more cushioning on your foot. Special Mole Skins are the best solution for blisters.

Our Hiking & Trekking website deals in much more detail with blisters. So for more details about blisters visit Blisters - Preventing & Treating Blisters.

Dehydration
Golf may not be an extremely physical game but your body still loses enough water to make you feel dehydrated and tired especially on hot days. These kinds of feelings affect your game so it helps to drink a lot of water and take some drinking water along as you make your way around the Golf Course. You may also drink soda or any sport drinks. Some Golfers like to drink alcohol while playing. But drinking alcohol should be done in moderation. Alcohol also has dehydrating effect, so it is best to drink water and alcohol alternately.

Insect Bites
The Golf Course is one good habitat for bugs especially mosquitoes and insects that live in the grass and water. Mosquitoes may bother you while you are simply walking or worst, when you are Putting. It always helps to bring an insect repellant or put on some insect repelling lotion. You are Playing Golf in the outdoors and you may never know what insects might bite you.

Sunburn
The sun is any Golfer's friend and enemy. It is nice to Play Golf on a sunny day when you do not have to worry about getting soaked in the rain. But playing on a sunny day poses a new problem - Sunburn. Using a Golf Hat will protect by preventing from getting the sun directly in your face and perhaps, your neck. Applying some sunscreen in your arms and other parts of your body that risk exposure to the sun helps to get you really protected.

Lightning
It is very unlikely to get struck by lightning but because the consequences are so heavy we will detail about it here. People on the Golf Course risk this because they are standing in an open field where they are the tallest objects. A Golf Club is also an excellent lightning rod. Most courses play a warning horn when lightning struck in their area.

If you hear the alarm or you see lightning struck in a distance, go immediately to a shelter or go to the clubhouse as fast as you can. If there is no shelter and the clubhouse is too far, just leave your Golf Clubs and make sure you sit or crouch and avoid being near an isolated tall object. If you are in the Rough, take cover beneath shrubs or any group of plants in similar height. Getting into the Golf Cart will also keep you safe as long as you don't touch any metal inside it.

Backaches & Other Sores
The most common physical problem of golfers is the lower back pain and shoulder aches. This may occur when you twist you body during your backswing or when you stretch your shoulders too much in the Follow-Through. These injuries are avoidable if you work on making your body more flexible. Working on your flexibility will not only help you reduce your risk on having back or shoulder problems, but will also help you improve your game.

Do some Warm-Up Exercises before you Play Golf and it will surely help get those muscles in tune for Golf Club Swinging and Walking around the Golf Course.

These are just some of the common Golf Injuries you can encounter when you play Golf. Prevention is always better than cure. Get familiar with these Golf injuries so that you would know what to do if in case it happens to you.
