I noticed that many golf companies design irons with wider soles. What is the effect of a wider sole on irons anyway?

wider soles will allow the golfer to hit the ball a little higher with the same loft and shaft compared to an iron with a traditional sole. I think this is just the reason, I'm not sure though.

Wider soles serves two purposes: one, to prevent the club from digging into the turf and second, to move more weight low and back of the clubface to put the center of gravity in a position.

the only downside for myself with regards to these wide sole irons came with the pitching wedge from tight
lies in the fairway... i didn't feel i was able to strike the ball as
crisply as i wanted or control the trajectory the way i wanted...

Wide soles on golf clubs are more comfortable while handling. It hit the ball very strongly and firmly.
