Who Is Tommy Armour?
The life of Tommy Armour was one of many passions and a single overriding addiction — the game of golf. The legendary “Silver Scot” fervently believed that details, tricks and complexities needlessly complicated the game and the golfer. Simplicity, concentration, economy of effort — and most importantly, a genuine love of the game — provided the true path to excelling on the links.
Tommy Armour was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 24, 1894. After an injury in combat during World War I, he took up golf as a form of physical therapy. While Armour never fully recovered from his injuries, he went on to enjoy a spectacular career. He was a superstar of the game before the term had been coined.
After winning tournaments in England, Scotland and France, Armour moved to the United States, became a professional golfer in 1924, and proceeded to win more than 40 prestigious tournaments. A contemporary and friend of golf immortals like Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen, Tommy Armour was known for the strength in his hands, the strength of his game and for the command he possessed with his fairway woods and longer clubs. During a five-year stretch from 1927 to 1931, he won 16 championships, including three majors — the 1927 U.S. Open, the 1930 PGA and the 1931 British Open.
If Tommy Armour was legendary for his many impressive victories, he held an even greater stature as a teacher of the game. After 1935, he retired from major competition and became a golf instructor at the Boca Raton Club in Florida. While many teachers concentrated on intricate mechanics, Armour preached a very different mantra — keep matters simple, focus on the shot, get a firm grip, and swing away!
