The Company
The genesis of the Heavy Putter dates back to 1994. It was then that Stephen Boccieri started the wheels turning on the engineering concepts and product development processes that led to the birth of the Heavy Putter in 2003. The first step in his journey was to deploy his engineering background to understand how the golf industry produced equipment. After exhaustive studies evaluating equipment from all the major manufacturers, he was puzzled and surprised at the inconsistencies that existed across the board. Admittedly, the task was somewhat self-serving as Steve, a one handicap, was looking for answers to improve his own game.
Steve’s design background led him to focus on solid engineering principles, and apply them to the construction of a golf club. Having the eye of a good player, he also understood the importance of maintaining a pleasing but efficient design. His early attention was focused on the dynamic effects of shafts; realizing that various bending characteristics could alter the consistency of a players swing. This study led to a complete database of all the shaft profiles in the market place. With this data, Steve was able to apply the analytical analysis of the performance of each shaft to determine the most consistent club for the player.
Establishing consistency in the swing got Boccieri to start focusing on putting. He realized the shaft performance was not going to be a critical factor in a good putter design. It was easy to design a putter head with a high moment of inertia; the trick was how the design was going to make the player more consistent. Once he found the right profile of a shaft for a player’s driver, he improved consistency..…. now he was on a mission to figure out how to engage the larger, more stable upper body muscles used the full swing to improve the putting stroke.
Boccieri’s experimentation with the putter started by adding mass to the putter head. This was successful up to a point, but too much weight started to exacerbate the amount of wrist release throughout the stroke. He found that the only way he could increase the head mass enough to engage the large muscles was add a counter-weight to the grip end of the shaft. In doing so, he raised the balance point 75% higher than conventional putters. This counter weight became known as the Weight Management System TM or WMSTM . What the WMS did was manage the increased weight in the head by using balance….. a simple but necessary innovation. A by-product of the higher balance point was it brought much of the weight of the putter closer to the player’s core center of gravity promoting more stability during the stroke. The combination of the increased head mass and the WMS gave the putter enough total weight to engage the larger muscle groups and disengage the small wrist and hand muscles. This led to a consistent, repetitive, pendulum stroke.
What is so unique about the Heavy Putter is that it is the only club in the history of the game that can claim that it improves the player’s stroke by making it more consistent. We have scientific data to back that statement up. With the use of the Science and Motion ultra sound machine we have demonstrated by testing hundreds of player and each player showed a dramatic improvement in the overall consistency.
In 2003, work began on the production prototype. Various weight combinations, styles, shaft configurations, and head designs were tested, re-tested and tested again. In late 2004, Boccieri had finished the development of the first Heavy Putters ready for tour use. These putters were made by hand in Steve’s “lab”, and he personally brought them out on tour to get direct feedback from the players. The reaction was better and bigger than anything Steve could have hoped for. Steve went immediately to work on putting a supply chain solution in place to service the anticipated demand. He also went about building his team. Boccieri Golf LLC “the company” was starting to take shape.
The buzz about the Heavy Putter began at our introduction in 2005 at the PGA Merchandise Show. The Company was flooded with orders, and was off to the races. Shortly after the 2005 PGA Show, and with hundreds of customer orders in hand, the Company moved out of its first home in Steve’s garage and basement to a temporary facility in Ridgefield. Steve Bollerman joined the team as CFO/COO to round out the management team of Boccieri along with Robert Himel. Rob had been with Boccieri from the beginning and is “VP of Everything”. Soon after, the sales, customer service and marketing teams were assembled. Rapid growth in 2005 led to its relocation to its permanent 7,000 square foot facility in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The Heavy Putter is assembled in the Ohio, USA by Golfworks, a company that applies the same exacting standards as Boccieri Golf. Our distribution is handled with precision by PMA in Tempe, AZ. Boccieri Golf is now a global company, with distribution in over 20 countries around the globe.
With the launch of the infomercial in April 2006, Heavy Putter is now poised to make a significant impact on the golf industry, and is ready to complete its mission to revolutionize the putting game.
