About Feel Golf
Feel Golf’s story is inseparable from its founder, Dr. Lee Miller. Lee has a Ph.D. in engineering with years of industry experience in the aerospace, medical, automotive and golf. He’s a current PGA member, he has assisted in designing golf courses and practice facilities, owned golf retail operations and in golf sales. Lee reportedly was one of the first club fitters on the PGA Tour, and it is from this club fitting role for the world’s best players, that Feel golf was born.
Lee played on Tour, where he would qualify on Mondays as a “rabbit” (a player chasing one of the openings to play in the tournament). When Lee didn’t make the tournament, which was more often than not, he worked on his fellow competitors’ golf clubs. During a rain delay at one tournament, talk turned to clubs and the work Lee did on the other players’ clubs. One of the players suggested that Lee begin to make clubs rather than work on their clubs. He had all the skills necessary, had owned manufacturing businesses and knew how to make the clubs these players needed. Many were already using clubs he had fitted to them. Lee said “I am not a club maker, I am a player.” One of the players replied “Lee, I hate to tell you this but, you are a much better club maker than you are a player”. With this realization, Lee’s club making career was about to be launched.
When the first few wedges Lee made started showing up in tournament play, a tournament official stopped at the range and informed Lee that for his clubs to be used on Tour they had to have a name on them, a brand. After the official left, Lee looked at the other players and one suggested that, since the clubs felt so good, let’s call them “Feel”. The name stuck, the company was born and the brand established.
Charlie Sifford, who is in the World Golf Hall of Fame, had Lee work on his clubs but could never remember his name. Charlie would say to his caddy, “Go get that doctor guy that makes the clubs feel so good, that Dr. Feel guy”. That’s how Dr Feel’s name came about. And so, after being born on the 1986 PGA Tour, Feel Golf became a Michigan Corporation in 1988 and quickly built a reputation for crafting the best and most versatile wedges in the industry.
Dr. Miller retired to California in 1996, but due to player demand he emerged from retirement and re-launched Feel Golf in 2000 as a California corporation. Feel Golf has grown from a once tiny club manufacture into a major worldwide competitor.
Feel Golf, the only golf club OEM that’s owned and operated by PGA members, is based in Monterey, Ca. USA.
